Abstract

1390983 Edge connectors ELCO CORP 20 March 1972 [19 March 1971] 12972/72 Heading H2E A connector comprises a plurality of contacts 14 secured to a circuit board 10 and an insulator 16 comprising two side walls 36, 38 joined by partitions 40 which form recesses 42 for receiving the contacts 14, the insulator including a preloading means such as a beam 46 which engages and preloads a resilient mating portion 24 of the contacts. Each contact comprises a tail 20 for connection to a wire by wrapping, soldering or crimping, or to a socket (not shown) a shank 26 which engages a hole in the board 10, a stop shoulder 32 and a bifurcated resilient curved mating portion 24. The insulator is formed with a guide 44 at each end and the partitions with an opening 42 with tapered edges 41 for receiving the edge of a circuit board adapted to mate with the contacts; bosses 48 on the insulator engage holes in the board 10. In use the contacts 14 are first secured to the board 10 and the insulator is subsequently pressed into position over the contacts, the mating portions riding over and bearing against the beam 46. In the embodiment of Fig. 6, not shown, the free ends (52) of the mating portions are seated in recesses (53) formed in the walls adjacent the open portion 42 while the beam 46 may be optionally omitted.
