Claims (25)

38839/2 WHAT XS C IMED IS:
1. Electric connector meas adapted for making connection to the edge contact of a printed circuit or like card* said means including a plurality of contact members, at least two of said contacts each having tail and mating portions integrally joined by a mounting portion each said mating portion being curved and having a convex mating surface for engaging the edge contact of the card, said mounting portion having means for supporting said contact in an upright position on and with respect to a motherboard, said tail portion being shaped so that a connection can be made thereto* said connector means further Including an insulator being capable of being mounted over said contacts when said contacts are mounted in the upright position on the motherboard, said insulator comprising two spaced side vails, an opening in said insulator to admit the entry of the edge of a card between said side vails, and a preleading member, said insulator being capable of being assembled over contacts positioned in a motherboard by pushing said insulator down over the upright contacts, the contacts being engaged by said preloading member when: said insulator is assembled over said contacts* so that when said insulator is in a inal position adjacent sai motherboard* the contact members are preloaded each with its mating surface displaced from its free-standing position.

Electric connector means adapted for making connection to the edge contact of a printed circuit or like card* said means Including a plurality of contact members, at least two of said contacts each having tail and mating portions integrally joined by a mounting portion each said mating portion being curved and having a convex mating surface for engaging the edge contact of the card, said mounting portion having means for supporting said contact in an upright position on and with respect to a motherboard* said tail portion being shaped so that a connectio can be made thereto* said connector means further including en Insulator 38839/2 being capable of being mounted over said contacts when said contacts are mounted in the upright position on the motherboard* said insulator comprising two spaced side walls* an opening in said Insulator to admit the entry of the edge of a card between eaid side walls* and a preloading member comprising a centre member between and spaced from said side walls » said insulator being capable of being assembled over contacts positioned in a motherboard by pushing said insolator down oer the upright contacts* said contacts being engaged by said preloading centre member as said insulator is assembled over said contacts* so that when said insulator is in a final position adjacent said motherboard* the contact members are preloaded each with its mating surface displaced from its free-standing position.
3. # Electric connector means adapted for making connection to the edge contact of a printed circuit or like card* said means including a plurality of contact members* at least two of said contacts each having tall and mating portions integrally joined by a mounting portion each said mating portion being curved and having a convex mating surface for engaging the edge contact of the card* said mounting portion having means for supporting said contact in an upright position on and with respect to a motherboard* said tall portion being shaped so that a connection can be made thereto* said connector means further including an insulator being capable of being mounted over said contacts when said contacts are mounted in the upright position on the motherboard* said insulator comprising two spaced side walls* an opening In said insulator to admit the entry of the edge of a card between said side walls* said insulator including means to provide for each contact a preloading member said insulator being capable of being assembled over contacts positioned In a motherboard by pushing said insulator down over the upright contacts* said contacts being engaged by said preloading member when said insulator is assembled over said contacts* so that when said insulator is In a final position adjacent said motherboard* the contact members are each preloaded* 38839/2
4. * An electric connector means in accordance with any of claims 1 to 3, wherein said contacts are each formed* with stop means to limit the insertion of said tail portion of the contact into an opening in the motherboard*
5. An electric connector means in accordance with claim 4* wherein said stop means is provided by two shoulders formed on the contact*'
6. An electric connector means in accordance with any of the preceding claims, wherein said mounting portion of each contact is of rectangular cross section*
7. · An electric connector means in accordance with an of the preceding claims* wherein said face portion of each contact is of rectangular cross-section*

11. * An electric connector means in accordance with claim 2» and any of claims 4 to 10» wherein said Insulator and said contacts are shaped so that on assembly of the Insulator over contacts inserted in a motherboard* the insulator is caused by engagement of the contacts and the insulator to be urged in the direction against the surface of the motherboard*
12. An electric connector means in accordance with any of the preceding claims* wherein said insulator includes generally parallel partitions to extending between said side walls* said contacts being adapted ga be received in spaces between adjacent partitions* 38839*2

17. An electric connector means in accordance with claims 12 and 13 » and 16 I wherein the said flat surface of the centre member is co anar with surfaces located in the partitions * so that a substantially flat continuous surf aee is presented to the edge of a card inserted in the slot*
18. An electric connector means substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
19. · An assembly in accordance with any of the preceding claims* in conjunction with a motherboard, said motherboard having a plurality of contacts mounted thereon, said insulator being positioned over said mounted contacts*
20. An assembly in accordance with claim 19, wherein said motherboard includes at least one row of holes therein, with the mounting portions of said contacts passing through said holes*
21. · An assembly in accordance vith claims 19 or 20» said motherboard having two parallel rows of contacts mounted thereon, with the convex mating portions of the contacts facing inwardly of the two rows* 38839/2
22. * An assembly in accordance with claims 20 or 21» wherein said mounting portions of said contacts are a force fit in said holes*

24. · A method of assembling an electrical connector according to any of the preceding claims to a motherboard which comprises inserting in said motherboard a plurality of contacts· each contact having a tail portion and a carved mating portion integrally joined by a mounting portion» 8id contacts being mounted on the motherboard in an upright position, passing over the mounted contacts an insulator which engages said contacts and is shaped so that as the insulator is passed over the contacts the contacts aret preloaded* and held in preloaded condition* when the insulator is in position against the motherboard.
