Abstract
1390889 Deformable energy-absorbing devices ROLLS ROYCE MOTORS Ltd 7 Nov 1973 [3 Aug 1973] 36995/73 Heading F2E An energy dissipation device comprises a plate of tearable material having a portion cut out to form a tongue and two lines of weakened material formed either by pressing (as defined below) or by grooving on both sides of the plate extending from the region at which the tongue is connected to the rest of the plate such that the length of the tongue may be increased by a tearing action under the action of a force applied to it; where pressing is adopted it must be such that the plane of the material between the lines is displaced relative to the plane of the plate. As shown in Figs. 3, 4, V-section grooves 2, 3, are machined in opposite sides of a mild steel plate 1 to produce a U-shaped weakened line in the plate. The closed end within the U is partly detached from the plate to form a tongue 4 which is curled back over the plate. Part of a seat belt restraint system may be attached to the tongue at 5, and the plate may be attached at holes 6, 7 to a motor vehicle; alternatively the plate 1 may be an integral part of the vehicle body. The device of Fig. 3 may be connected between the seat belt restraint system and a door pillar. Alternatively or additionally a device may be connected between the restraint system and the floor of the vehicle on one or both sides of the associated vehicle seat. The seat belt restraint system may be a lap belt or a diagonal belt or both.
