Abstract

1323314 Seat belt assembly SOC ANON FRANCAISE DU FERODO 17 July 1970 [29 July 1969] 34807/70 Heading A3V [Also in Division F2] A vehicle seat belt device comprises a belt having an end portion 14 of greater thickness than the remainder of the belt, and throttling means in the form of two bars 15, 16 defining a gap narrower than the thickness of the end portion 14, so that the throttling means allows displacement of the end portion 14 therebetween when the tensile stress acting on the belt exceeds a predetermined value (i.e. when a collision occurs) and simultaneously deforms the end portion with substantially no longitudinal reaction of the belt. The end portion comprises two layers 10, 11 of conventional material with a layer 12 of elastomer between them. An abutment member 24 limits the extent of movement of the belt through the throttling means. The bars 15, 16 may be fixed or rotatable and mounted on a bracket 19, or they may be replaced by folds formed in sheet metal members, see Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
