Abstract

1390150 Necking cans UNITED CAN CO 31 Dec 1973 [4 Jan 1973] 60224/73 Heading B3Q Cans are necked in the annular gap between a die 16 and a segmented core 21 the segments 30 of which are individually movable so that the thickened zone of a lap seam may be accommodated by inward movement of the adjacent segments. The core, comprising the segments 30 and back and front members 22, 27 held to a central member 26 by a screw 28, is slidable in a mounting 12 to which the die 16 is fixed by a nut 14. The segments are biased outwardly against shoulders on the members 22, 27 by fluid supplied through screw 28 and a bolt 13 to the inside of a flexible sleeve 35. A spring 25 presses the core axially although the spring may be removed if the axial area of the core subjected to fluid pressure is sufficient. Operation.-A can is slid into the die and against an inward camming surface which turns the end of the can against a shoulder 33 on the segments. Further movement of the can now moves the core assembly to extend the neck, Fig. 2 (not shown). The can is now withdrawn and shortly before the core reaches its initial position a valve releases the fluid pressure within sleeve 35 so as to avoid scratching the inside of the can. The apparatus may be moved instead of the can.
