Abstract

1534716 Flanging and necking tubular bodies METAL BOX Ltd 23 Aug 1976 [5 Sept 1975] 36596/75 Heading B3E A neck and flange are formed on the end of a can body by applying an axial shortening force to the body simultaneously with an inward radial force. Apparatus for carrying out the method in the Figures comprises a can body lift pad 22 which raises the body so that a preformed flange 19 engages an annular rebate 21 in a thrust ring 20. Pad, body, ring, and a pilot tool 24 radiused at 25 are rotatable together about axis 23, and a forming roll 26 radiused at 27 is rotatable about axis 28, and can be moved radially as shown by arrow 29. Tools 24 and 26 are axially fixed, while the pad, body, and ring are axially movable past them. In operation, the body is raised by the pad to engage the ring, and during rotation of the body, radially inward movement of tool 26 is co-ordinated with separate axial movements of the pad and ring to give a desired neck and flange shape, e.g. a double neck or the shape shown half completed in Fig. 4, while maintaining the body under axial compression. Two tools 26 may be used.
