Abstract

1389238 Encapsulating and coating process CIBA-GEIGY AG 12 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 32582/72 Heading A5B [Also in Divisions B8 and C3] Finely divided substances are coated or encapsulated by dispersing them in a liquid, with the aid of a reactive surface active agent which is obtained from an aminoplast substance and is capable of polymerising to form a product which is insoluble or only sparingly soluble in the said liquid, and spray-drying the resultant under conditions whereby the surface active agent polymerises and a dry encapsulated product results. The preferred polymerisable surface active agents are aminoplast precondensates, e.g. methylolmelamines and ureaformaldehyde precondensates, with or without phenoplast precondensates. The liquid used may be water or an organic liquid, it being chosen so that the substance to be encapsulated is insoluble therein. Such substances to be encapsulated (which may be solids, liquids or solutions) include medicines (e.g. barbiturates) minerals (e.g. silica, kaolin impregnated with an insecticide), oils, dyes, cosmetic ingredients and odourants (e.g. pine oil).
