Abstract

A sheet material carries minute, hollow, rupturable capsules that are insoluble but dispersible in water, have shells of a polymer formed by the condensation of urea or thiourea and an aldehyde and contain a water-immiscible liquid fill releasable into the sheet material upon rupture of the capsules. The sheet material may be a cellulosic paper or a mica paper. The liquid fill may be a colour-forming agent to give a pressure-sensitive record sheet, a shoe polish, a tacky adhesive, a perfume, an oil or wax to produce a locally transparentizable sheet, a plant fertilizer, a pesticide, a soil conditioning agent, a paint-remover, e.g. tetrachlorethylene, a perfluorocarbon water-repellent, or a fire-retardant. The sheet material may be made by adding the capsules to an aqueous slurry of sheet-forming solids and then depositing the slurry, e.g. in a paper-making machine, to form a sheet therefrom which carries the capsules as a filler. When the capsules contain colour-forming agents for pressure-sensitive record sheets, they may be coated with titanium dioxide to reduce background colour. A tamperproof decorative paper may be made by using dye-filled capsules and then rupturing them.
