Abstract

1388924 Perfluoroalkyl phosphorus compounds HOECHST AG 3 March 1972 [6 March 1971] 9990/72 Heading C2P The invention comprises compounds of the formula R f(3-x) P(O) y (OH) x in which x is 1 or 2, y is 0 or 1 and R f is a C 4 -C 24 perfluoroalkyl radical, and their salts. They may be obtained either (a) by hydrolysing a perfluoroalkyl iodide R f(3-x) PI x or mixture thereof to form the compound(s) in which y is 0 and then treatng the latter compound or compounds with an oxidizing agent in the aqueous phase, or (b) (when y is 1) by oxidizing R f PI 2 or (R f ) 2 PI with chlorine and then hydrolysing the oxidized products so obtained. Specified oxidizing agents in method (a) are I 2 , oxygen, HNO 3 , Cl 2 , HClO and H 2 O 2 . The products may be converted to salts, e.g. by reacting them in an aqueous or aqueous alcoholic solution with sodium-, potassium- or ammonium hydroxide or carbonate or with mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine or morphol. The products are useful as wetting agents and may be used in the form of their aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solutions. They may also be used in the manufacture of poly-tetrafluoroethylene dispersions.
