Abstract
Phosphinic acid derivatives of formula <FORM:1023704/C4-C5/1> where R is alkyl, aryl, alkryl or aralkyl and may have one or more hydroxy or chloro substituents, and M is hydrogen or an alkali metal are stated to be useful as antioxidants for petroleum products.ALSO:Ethanolic solutions of phenoxymethylphosphinic acid, p-t-butylphenoxymethylphosphinic acid, p-t-butylphenoxymethylphosphonic acid or butoxymethylphosphinic acid are used to treat steel against corrosion.ALSO:The invention comprises oxymethylphosphinic acids and salts of formula <FORM:1023704/C2/1> where R is alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl and may contain one or more hydroxy or chloro substituents, and M is hydrogen or alkali metal. They may be prepared by reacting an alkali metal salt of chloromethylphosphinic acid with ROM and, if desired, liberating the free acids with HCl. Phenoxymethylphosphonic acid and p-t.-butyl-phenoxymethylphosphoni acid are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding phosphinic acids with HgCl2.
