Abstract

1388331 Plastics containers; container closures R A HEISLER 30 April 1973 20472/73 Headings B8D B8T and B8F A moulded plastics paint container is integrally-formed with a bail handle 30, which, as moulded, lies in a plane 70 parallel to and below the out-turned rim 22 of the container, said plane being the plane of the mould parting line. The container rim extends from the upper of divergent side wall portions 16 and 19 and is provided with a depending annular flange 24 to which the bail handle is connected by its ends and by intermediate webs 62 and 64. The webs are broken when it is desired to swing the handle to its carrying position. The flange is connected to the side wall by reinforcing ribs 38 and supports the container on the rim of a like container when nested therein. The container is provided with a moulded plastics cover 40 comprising a V-section plug portion 46 having a groove 50 located above a camming lip 48 and receiving an inwardly directed bead 20 at the inner edge of the container rim, a planar ring portion 52, and a depending rim 54. This cover rim is initially of smaller diameter than the container flange 24 so that, when the cover is applied, the rim is stretched over the flange and the resultant tension in the ring portion 52 retains the bead and groove in fluid-tight engagement. The lower portion of the plug portion has an interference fit with the container side wall to form a further seal. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the bead and groove are of polygonal rather than arcuate in section. In another modification, Figs. 14A-14C (not shown), the container rim and cover are also formed with a further cooperating groove 456 and bead 476 to provide an additional seal and retention means, and the cover lip 448 scalingly engages a vertical container side wall portion 470 adjacent the rim to form a further seal. The cover is recessed at 44 to locate the base 17 of a container stacked thereon. In a modification, Figs. 9-11 (not shown), the recessed cover portion has an inwardly-directed lip 143 for the retention of a label or booklet within the recess or for locating the projection base ring 119 of a container stacked thereon. In further modifications, Figs. 13A and 13B (not shown), the container cover is provided with a self-sealing plug 246 or 346, which permits the insertion, and subsequent retraction, of a needle through the cover to inject a colour additive into the contents without loss thereof. In a final modification, Fig. 12 (not shown), a shoulder 125 is provided on the container to facilitate prying off the cover.
