Abstract
1385000 Steam irons SUNBEAM CORP 2 Nov 1973 [7 Nov 1972] 51047/73 Heading D1A An electric iron with a soleplate which can be used in a horizontal or a vertical position comprises a plastics housing 22 overlying and co-extensive with the soleplate 16 and including a reservoir 22b and a handle 20 extending from the top of the housing substantially parallel to the soleplate surface and having an electric power lead extending from its free end. The housing 22 is mounted on the soleplate 16 by apertured brackets 54, 55 to reduce heat conduction, has a flared skirt 92 to maintain the soleplate above a flat surface on which the iron is lain on its side (Fig. 2) and has a slot for a thermostat control arm 50 and a recess 24f for a scale 51. A removable pump 65, which acts as a stopper for the reservoir is fitted at the top of the housing, has a manually operated diaphragm 67, an inlet tube 66b with a check valve 66c and a flexible outlet tube 69 leading through a second check valve in a water conduit 38 to an offset steam generating chamber 31. From the chamber 31 steam passes through tortuous passages 31a to 31g, (Fig. 9) and across water drop retaining ribs 31b and 31j and steps 31k to steam ports 33. A valve 22e permits air to enter the reservoir as water is pumped therefrom.
