Abstract
1383738 Severing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 12 Sept 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 42857/73 Heading B3D [Also in Division E2] A crystal boule clamping fixture comprises a frame 11 in which are fixed a pair of parallel rods 25, 26, a clamp 30 hinged to the frame and movable to a closed position to press the crystal boule 20 against the rods and to an open position to permit insertion and withdrawal of a boule, a lever 40 fixed to the clamp and means 43 biasing the lever to the closed position, antitorque means 33 on the clamp to mate with means 32 on the crystal boule to inhibit rotation thereof, and means 45 acting on the lever to over-ride the biasing means to lift the clamp into the open position. The fixture is indexed to present the boule, which may be of silicon or germanium, to a blade 18 for cutting into thin slices. The frame 11 has flanges 13, 14 provided with arcuate slots 13A, 14A for receiving bolts 15, 16 whereby the frame is secured to a cutting machine 17 having a blade 18, which may be a thin annulus having a cutting edge on its inner periphery. The frame 11 has pedestals 2 having bores 23, 24 for receiving the rods 25, 26 which are retained therein by screws 25A, 25B. A pivot pin 34 is located on bores 29B in the pedestals and mounts the clamp 30 which is formed with a key way 33 for engagement by a glass filled phenolic key 32 bonded by an epoxy resin to the boule 20 to prevent rotation of the boule. A lever 40 is integral with the clamp and is apertured to provide clearance for a bolt 42 on which is a spring 43 acting on the lever to press the clamp against the boule which is thereby clamped against the rods 25, 26. A cam 45 can be rocked by a handle 46 and bears on the lever to move it against the spring so that the clamp is lifted from clamping engagement with the boule. When a boule is clamped, a pin 50 can be inserted in a hole 49 to render the cam inoperative. The pivot pin 34 may be mounted in alternative bores 29A with consequential alternation of the rod 42 and spring 43 for clamping larger boules. A drive means 65 having a lead screw 66 driven by a stepping motor or air drive is provided to effect indexing of the boule between the guide rods and cover. Dressing.-The saw 18 may be dressed by a silicon carbide stick 54 held by a clamp 55 on a slide 56 adjustable parallel to the boule 20 by a drive pinion screw 57 and rack.
