[Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A process for cutting screwthreads on glass, quartz, or silica tubes comprises mounting the tube to be threaded on a moving carriage by means of a support which is formed of vibration - absorbing material, rotating and axially displacing the tube at a speed corresponding to the pitch of the thread to be formed opposite a diamond disc which is rotated and urged towards the tube. In apparatus for carrying out the process, the carriage consists of a pair of cross members 9, 10, Fig. 1, which are interconnected by a central bar 8 and are slidable along rods 6 mounted in members 4, 5 carried by a baseplate 1, the carriage being movable by rotation of a lead screw 13 engaging a nut 14 on the bar 8. Each cross member 9, 10 carries a halfshaft 15, 16 having a centre 17, 18 of vibrationabsorbing material, such as rubber or plastic, between which the glass tube to be screwthreaded is mounted. The half-shaft 15 is urged towards the tube by a spring to an extent determined by a nut 22, and the half-shaft 16 is rotated in dependence on the movement of the carriage by a chain extending between a sprocket 25 on the shaft 16 and a sprocket 24 which is rotatably mounted on the carriage and has a key engaging a groove 23 in the lead screw. The diamond disc 26 is carried by a shaft 27 which is rotated in bearings on a plate 30 by a belt drive 35 from a motor 31 mounted on the plate. The plate is mounted on a pivot 36 supported by rods 39, 40 in such a manner that its centre of gravity G is between the pivot 36 and the shaft 27 so that the weight of the assembly acts to urge the diamond disc against the glass tube to an extent determined by an adjustable stop 41. The machine may be adapted for grinding internal screw threads in glass tubes. The same motor may be used for effecting rotation of the disc 26 and the lead screw 13.
