Abstract

1382482 Hoppers REDLER CONVEYORS Ltd 27 April 1973 [28 Jan 1972] 4176/72 Heading B8S A hopper for solid materials (e.g. ice) comprises a lower conical casing 11 and an upper cylindrical casing 18, the lower end of which extends into the conical casing 11 to form a peripheral annular gap, around which runs the drive head 24 of an arch breaker arm 16 movable around the conical wall of the casing 11 to agitate the ice, for discharge through an aperture 14 at the base of the casing 11. The arm 16 comprises a helical arrangement of prongs 60 on a tube, rotatable about its longitudinal axis by a drive 23, 21, 15 and universal joint 17, the rotating tube driving through the drive head 24, a pinion engaging a rack on the outside of the casing 18, to move the arm 16 around the casing 11. The drive head 24 includes a slipping clutch so that the prongs 60 can continue to break up the ice whilst there is too much resistance to movement of the arm 16 through the ice. The drive head 24 also incorporates rollers for engaging the conical casing 11, the outside of the cylindrical casing 18 and the inside of an outer cylindrical casing 10, to maintain the pinion and rack in engagement. Ice melting water may be supplied to the arm 16 from a line 59 through passage 58. In the embodiment of Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown), the drive head includes a pair of driven gearwheels engageable with the inside of the conical casing and biased into engagement therewith by a lever arm roller adjustably spring biased against the inner cylindrical housing.
