Abstract

1381082 Making patterns with light beams GERBER SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT CO 28 Jan 1972 [23 April 1971] 4159/72 Heading G2A [Also in Division B6] A graphic design is produced by selectively exposing a photo-sensitive surface M to a cathode ray tube 12 using a projection lens system 14, the face of the CRT 12 being divided into a central area 59 in which the cathode ray beam is used to draw characters, and an outer annular portion covered by an opaque mask 60 including a plurality of openings 61 (a - e). When the beam is deflected to impinge on one such opening continuously, it may scan the opening by being deflected in a raster fashion, or alternatively it may be defocused to form a spot larger than the opening. After one character has been generated and projected on to the surface M, the CRT 12 and lens system 14 are moved in accordance with control signals from a computer 18, which also controls the beam generated within the CRT 12. The mask 60 may be replaced, at each sub-area of the screen associated with a particular character, by phosphorescent material in the shape of the character. Alternatively a movable mask may be used. The device may also be used to draw lines by means of a spot of light which is moved over the surface M. The beam current control 50 is provided with compensating networks to increase the beam intensity as a function of the rate at which the projected image is moved over the surface, which thus receives the same quantity of light per unit time.
