Abstract

1380055 Electrolytic deposition of composite coatings BRITISH NON-FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 23 Nov 1972 [23 Nov 1971] 54448/71 Heading C7B A plating bath for the electro-deposition of a composite coating comprising particles dispersed in a metal matrix containing chromium comprises a liquid mixture of water and a dipolar organic compound whose molecule contains a highly electro-negative oxygen atom (e.g. dimethyl formamide), trivalent chromium and insoluble particles or whiskers. Iron and/or nickel may be present to co-deposit with the chromium; the anion present may be sulphate or chloride; and e.g. ammonium ion, boric acid or a cationic surfactant may also be present in the bath. The insoluble particles may be of alumina, yttria, zirconium diboride, molybdenum disulphide, tungsten carbide or a metal insoluble in the bath.
