Abstract

1396455 Forming carbide layers electrolytically TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO KK 1 May 1973 [4 May 1972 9 May 1972 8 June 1972 19 April 1973] 20631/73 Heading C7B A carbide of a group Va element, e.g. V, Nb, Ta is formed on an Fe, Fe alloy or cemented carbide substrate, containing at least 0À05% carbon, by immersing the substrate in a molten bath containing boron oxide, e.g. boric acid or Na or K borate and the group Va element, and applying a current to the bath using the substrate as a cathode. At large current densities a small amount of group Va boride may also be formed. The group Va element may be present as the element, an alloy, oxide or chloride, e.g. V 2 O 3 , V 2 O 5 , VOCl 2 , NaVO 3 , Na 2 VO 4 , NH 4 VO 2 , Nb 2 O 5 , Ta 2 O 5 , VCl 3 , NbCl 4 or TaCl 5 . The anode may be, e.g. of steel or graphite, or a metal plate or rod which may contain the Group Va element.
