Abstract

1378883 Electro-plating chromium ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 18 Feb 1972 [23 Feb 1971] 5270/71 Heading C7B A chromium electro-plating process employs a C anode and an electrolyte wherein a major proportion of the anions are oxy anions e.g. sulphate and which further comprises Cl or Br ions and a dissolved N-containing compound which will react with Cl or Br in aqueous medium to form nitrogen. The chloride or bromide may be that of a N-containing base e.g. ammonium or of an alkali metal or HCl or HBr. The N-containing compound is selected from ammonium, hydroxylamine, urea, hydrazine, an aliphatic amine e.g. methylamine, or heterocyclic amine e.g. piperidine. Boric acid and brightening and levelling agents may be included. Cr plating and electrowinning baths are specified containing chromic sulphate and ammonium chloride, with or without ammonium sulphate and boric acid; dimethyl formamide may replace ammonium chloride.
