Abstract
1369486 Producing alloys ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICH-DUDELANGE SA 15 Nov 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 52992/71 Heading C7D A process for the discontinuous or continuous melting of metal or alloy under an electroconductive slag in which solid alloying ingredients or slag-forming components are added during operation is characterized by the incorporation in the additive composition of at least one reactive metal element which supplies heat in being oxidized, the product of the oxidation corresponding to one of the constituents of the electroslag employed. Thus the additives are rapidly melted locally and prevent heterogeneous inclusions or other disturbances. The process is particularly applicable to the addition of titanium, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, manganese, niobium, tantalum, chromium, cobalt and/or nickel to iron; the reactive metal elements incorporated include lanthanum, calcium, cerium, barium, titanium, zirconium, aluminium, magnesium and silicon. The alloying components can all be introduced in the metallic state but may include one or more in the form of an oxide in order to supply the oxygen needed for reaction with the reactive elements; alternatively an oxygenated compound can be utilized. The additive mixture may be in the form of granules having a lower density than that of its metal constituents.
