Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare metallurgical formed coke having desired strength, by heating a mixture of low caking coal and a binder directly with gas wherein the final carbonization temperature is selected within a specific range.
CONSTITUTION: Briquette obtained by compression forming of a mixture composed of a low caking coal and a binder such as coal tar, coal pitch, petroleum asphalt, etc., is carbonized by heating directly with gas at a final carbonization temperature of between 750 and 850°C to obtain the objective metallurgical formed coke. A single stage tuyere for introducing the heating medium is used, and the rate of temperature increase at the center of the briquette is controlled to 10W40°C/min. at 200°C. The construction of the coke oven and the external pipings are simplified, and undesirable effects of oxidative components in the coke oven, e.g. H2O, CO2, etc., are eliminated by this process.
