Abstract
1363764 Hardening surfaces by boriding A BOPP 23 July 1971 [28 July 1970] 34699/71 Headings C7F and C7U A boriding composition comprises a mixture containing (parts by weight) 5 to 85 boron carbide, 1 to 73 anhydrous alumina, 1 p. p. m. to 6 wt. parts NaBF 4 , and 1 p.p.m. to 10 wt. parts NaF, and is used to treat a steel or cemented carbide substrate at a temperature above 570 C in an essentially oxygen-free atmosphere. The composition may be a 180-320 mesh/cm powder and may have added to it CF 4 as a gaseous activator, Mg as basic carbonate to prevent sintering of the powder to the substrate, T, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, or an oxide, carbide, boride, nitride or silicide of any of these, and C black may also be added. The powder may be dispersed in a vehicle such as oil or dibutyl phthalate for application to the surface of a large object by spraying, immersion, or wiping, or the substrate may be packed in the powder composition. The upper temperature limit is usually 1150C; protective atmospheres are N 2 , CO 2 , or inert gas; the substrate may be an alloy steel, e.g. containing Cr, W, or Ni, or a cemented carbide, e.g. WC 94%-CO 6%.
