Abstract

1361842 Unsaturated polyester compositions UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 April 1971 [2 Feb 1970 16 Sept 1970 18 Jan 1971] 00039/74 Divided out of 1361841 Heading C3P A composition contains an unsaturated polyester having as a low-profile additive a polymer of vinyl acetate having an average of at least one carboxyl group per molecule present in the composition in an amount of 1 to 60% by weight based on the weight of the polyester. Suitable polymers of vinyl acetate are a copolymer of vinyl acetate and a copolymerizable carboxylic acid, polyvinyl acetate, to which has been grafted a monomer containing carboxylic acid group and a - partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate which has been esterified to contain carboxylic acid groups. In the examples the compositions comprise a polyester prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and propylene glycol, hydroquinone, styrene, calcium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, copolymer of vinyl acetate and acrylic acid, graft copolymer of polyvinyl acetate and acrylic acid, polymethylmethacrylate and dropped glass fibres and cured using benzoyl peroxide.
