Abstract

1,143,974. Polyvinyl alcohol compositions. KURASHIKI RAYON K.K. 27 April, 1966 [27 April, 1965], No. 18378/66. Headings C3G and C3P. [Also in Division B2] A pigment coating composition for paper comprises a slurry of an inorganic pigment and a binder therefor, the binder being a macromolecular polymer comprising a plurality of repeating organic units, from 3 to 60 mol. % of these having free carboxylic groups and all or a major proportion of the remainder being hydroxy ethylene units. Suitable polymers are the hydrolysis product of a copolymer of a vinyl ester and an unsaturated carboxylic acid, or the anhydride or an ester thereof, a partial ester of a dicarboxylic acid and a polyvinyl alcohol, a graft copolymer of polyvinyl alcohol and an unsaturated acid, and the hydrolysis product of a graft copolymer of polyvinyl alcohol or an ester thereof and an ester or nitrile of an unsaturated acid, The polymer may be cross-linked with a compound of a metal of Group I B , II or III of the Periodic Table of Mendeleev. In the Examples (1) and (2) vinyl acetate and crotonic acid are copolymerized using α,α<SP>1</SP>-azobisisobutyronitrile, hydrolysed in methanol using methanolic sodium hydroxide and mixed with clay slurries, sodium hexameta-phosphate, a styrene-butadiene copolymer latex, and satin white, (3) as above but using maleic anhydride in place of crotonic acid and carried out in acetone; (4) polyvinyl alcohol is treated with phthalic anhydride and pyridine in dimethyl sulphoxide and then with hydro - chloric acid; (5) polyvinyl alcohol is irradiated and graft polymerized with acrylonitrile. Paper coatings are treated with aluminium sulphate or zinc sulphate.
