Abstract

1360635 Paints and printing inks IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 March 1972 [5 April 1971] 8660/71 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C4] A paint or printing ink comprises (a) a waterinsoluble monoazo dyestuff free from carboxylate and sulphonate groups and having, in one tautomeric form, the formula wherein A is the radical of a diazo component of the benzene, naphthalene or anthraquinone series; Z is H, or a hydrocarbon, heterocyclic or amino radical or a substituted derivative thereof; X is H, CN, COR, COOR, CONRR<SP>1</SP>, or a hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical or substituted derivative thereof; Y is H, Cl, CN, COR, COOR, CONRR<SP>1</SP> or a radical as in X, or X and Y together form an optionally substituted fused benzene ring; and R and R<SP>1</SP> each independently represent H (except where X or Y is is -COOH) or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical, or R, R<SP>1</SP> and N together form a 5- or 6-membered heterocycle, (b) a film-forming binder, and optionally (c) a solvent for (a) and/or (b). The binder may be a natural or synthetic resin, cellulose derivative, or a drying oil plus a drier. Conventional solvents are used. Optional additives are waxes, plasticizers, further dyestuffs, pigments, e.g. TiO 2 or carbon black, and extenders, e.g. barytes, SiO 2 , china clay or talc. In Example 2, a short or medium oil alkyd resin and 2 : 6-dihydroxy-3-cyano-4-methyl-5- (o-nitrophenylazo) pyridine are dispersed in xylene/butanol, and the dispersion is mixed with a xylene solution of a medium oil alkyd and a butanol solution of a melamine-formaldehyde resin to give a reddish-yellow paint. In Example 3, an aqueous dispersion of the (p) derivative of the Example 2 azo dye is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of TiO 2 , NaCMC and polyvinyl acetate in an acrylic emulsion to give a yellow paint. In Example 4 an alkyd resin derived from phthalic anhydride, pentaerythritol and a C 10 monoglyceride, and 2 : 6-dihydroxy-3-carbonamido - 4 - methyl - 5 - (m - nitrophenylazo)- pyridine, are dispersed in white spirit and the dispersion is mixed with further alkyd resin, an alkyd resin derived from castor oil, glycerol, phthalic anhydride, and rosin, copolymerized with methyl methacrylate, plus tung and linseed oils and white spirit to give a reddish-yellow paint. Numerous other dyestuffs are also exemplified.
