Abstract
1360625 Controlling punching or marking operations CIBA-GEIGY AG 9 July 1971 [9 July 1970 18 June 1971] 32460/71 Heading G4H [Also in Division G1] Method and apparatus for registering a punching operation in a photographic film strip uses a plurality of photo-electric detectors arranged in a row perpendicular to the film length and the direction in which it is moved, each coupled to a Schmitt trigger to provide a "1" or "0" output according to the intensity of light sensed, the outputs of all the trigger circuits being added and continuously compared with two threshold levels as the film is moved by a stepping motor, the added output also being differentiated and compared with a further threshold, also indicative of polarity. When a frame beginning or end edge passes, the summed digital outputs vary greatly, and pulses indicative of a rise or a fall with respect to the threshold levels are produced. Continuous signals are also produced as and when the summed output is above or below the thresholds and these are logically compared with the pulsed signals to provide pulsed signals indicative of a possible edge of the image. All the circuitry is controlled by a clock which also controls the stepping motor. In the event of a signal indicative of a possible image start being produced, this is delayed by a shift register to be emitted a few clock pulses prior to the corresponding end edge pulse and the two signals are compared with respect to time to provide a positive pulse indicative of an image end edge if the possible beginning and end signals occur within a particular time interval, spurious pulses emitted owing to the peculiarities of the image within the frame thereby being ignored. These signals are successively grouped over 3 frames using shift registers and again if all three pulses in a group are emitted within a particular time interval, a punching command is transmitted. The stepping motor is halted until verification that the punching has been carried out is provided.
