Abstract

1359740 Polypropylene compositions SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 15 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 52883/71 Heading C3P Compositions comprise (a) 75 to 99 weight per cent of a normally solid polypropylene of average molecular weight at least 100,000 and (b) 1 to 25 weight per cent of an elastomeric selectively hydrogenated block copolymer having at least one monoalkenylarene polymer block and at least one conjugated diene polymer block, selectively hydrogenated so that at least 70% of the double bands in the diene polymer blocks and not more than 25% of the aromatic double bonds have been reduced. The block copolymers may be obtained by sequential polymerization and/or coupling. Preferred monoalkenylarene blocks are derived from styrene or α, methylstyrene, with or without conjugated dienes or vinyl pyridine, and preferred diene blocks are derived from butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene or methylpentadiene. Selective hydrogenation may be effected in solution in the presence of a cobalt, nickel or iron carboxylate. The compositions may be moulded into shaped articles of high impact resistance and reduced blushing. Examples describe compositions comprising polypropylene and (1-6) selectively and fully hydrogenated polystyrene / polybutadiene / polystyrene block copolymers and ethylene/propylene rubbers, and (7 and 8) selectively hydrogenated diethyl adipate coupled polystyrene/polyisoprene/lithium block copolymers.
