Abstract

1358330 Scale prevention FLUID STABILIZER CORP 7 Nov 1972 [15 May 1972] 51355/ 72 Heading B1X [Also in Divisions Cl and F2] Apparatus for controlling the deposition of organic and inorganic scale on surfaces in contact with water-bearing fluids wherein fluid flows through flow lines before reaching the surfaces comprises a casing having a flowthrough chamber, the said casing being suitable for, in use, being positioned in the said flow line such that the fluid flow through the flow line flows through the said chamber; and a polycrystalline core positioned in the casing, the said core having a plurality of members extending substantially along the axis of the flow-through chamber and disposed non- linearly relative to the said chamber, the said non-linearly disposed members defining non- linear flow channels for the flow of fluid therethrough; in use, the said non-linear fluid flow channels and the decrease in fluid pressure in the said chamber caused by the positioning of the core causing production and dissemination of seed crystals to act as alternative deposition sites for the scale. The core may contain Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Sn, Fe, Sb, S and/or SiO 2 ; its surface may accordingly be divided into domains of different crystal systems, and the growth of deposited crystals of for example calcium carbonate tends to stop at the domain boundary, resulting in small, easily dislodged crystals.
