Abstract
1357528 Gripper axminster looms QUAYLE CARPETS Ltd 3 Aug 1971 [15 Aug 1970] 39424/70 Headings D1E and D1K In a gripper Axminster loom, rows of short and long pile tufts are selectively obtained by moving a carriage 12 mounting carriers 11 away from the grippers 14 after they have gripped the yarn ends by either a short or a longer distance. When a long tuft is desired the carriage is moved back by plunger rod 18 which is driven from a cam shaft of the loom, until it comes-into contact with an abutment 44 (Fig. 3, not shown) and when a short tuft is desired, a Jacquard controlled wire 50 lowers a plate 47 slidably mounted on carriage 12, which comes into contact with abutment 43 before the carriage does, (Fig. 2, not shown). A spring biassed lost-motion device 27 in the plunger rod 18 then takes the driving force for the carriage. By this means J-shaped tufts are inserted into the fabric, and weft-wise raised or depressed strips may be produced in the pile. Some of the carriers may have empty pile yarn apertures which may be brought by the Jacquard into register with the gripper on certain picks so that a group of high tufts may be formed in a background of low tufts.
