Abstract

1356311 Cartridges WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON - BUHRLE AG 6 Sept 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 41414/71 Heading F3A A cartridge comprises a projectile 10, Fig. 2, secured in the mouth 3 of a cartridge case 2 by means of a sleeve 7 which is expanded into tight contact with the mouth upon the insertion of the projectile. The ends of a conical portion 9 of the sleeve also snap into a groove 14 in the projectile. Slits or holes (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) are provided to equalize pressure on either side of the sleeve when a propellant charge 5 is fired. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, a thickened portion 19 of the sleeve is expanded against the tapered part 4 upon insertion of the projectile. The sleeve 6 consists of steel and the cartridge case 2 consists of aluminium alloy with a protective coating which prevents the hot gases eroding and melting the alloy.
