Abstract

1352209 Centrifugal pumps B P CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 13 Nov 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 55555/71 Heading F1C A submersible pump comprises a substantially cylindrical shaft 2 of mean radius R 1 and length L connected between a drive mechanism (e.g., an electric motor 4) and an impeller 1 located in a housing 6, the shaft being free to rotate within a guide tube 3 of mean radius R 2 , and is such that 1.15<R 2 /R 1 <2À0 and L/ R1 > 80. Preferably, 1À15 <R 2 /R 1 <1À5. With these dimensions there is just sufficient lateral movement of the shaft to cause random contact with the guide tube, thus preventing localized heating. The shaft 2 is of stainless steel and guide tube 3 is of polypropylene. A rigid tube 5 of polyethylene or polypropylene connects the plastics housing 6 to the motor 4 and carries supports 12A, 12B for the guide tube 3. A plastics closure disc 14 is cemented to the housing 6.
