Abstract

1379267 Centrifugal pumps MAX-PLANCK-GES ZUR FORDERUNG DER WISSENSCHAFTEN EV 5 June 1972 [7 June 1971] 26079/72 Heading F1C [Also in Division H2] A centrifugal pump unit for corrosive liquids comprises a glass housing 14 containing a glass impeller assembly consisting of pump impeller 22 connected by shaft 20 to an enlargement 28 containing a ferromagnetic (e.g. ferrite) body 26, driving means 12 being provided outside the housing for generating a rotating magnetic field to rotate body 26 and thus drive impeller 22. Driving means 12 may consist of a second ferromagnetic body 32 supported in a cup-shaped member 34 coupled to a motor, at least one of the bodies 26, 32 being a permanent magnet. Alternatively, the rotating field may be produced electrically by means of a stationary stator. Housing 14 is sealed apart from inlet and outlet openings 16, 18 to impeller 22, the latter consisting of hollow hub 22a supporting radial tubes 22b. Tubular housing portion 14a provides a bearing for shaft 20 and one or other of these members may have longitudinal grooves to assist lubrication or removal of foreign bodies. Axial displacement of shaft 20 to the right is limited by pin 24 welded to the housing and to the left by a protrusion 30 on enlargement 28 co-operating with housing portion 14d. A removable p.t.f.e. closure may be provided in housing portion 14e to permit cleaning. The pump unit is supported by a stand 31.
