Abstract

1350867 Controlling winch brakes SOC ANON POCLAIN 7 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 10639/72 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] A device for controlling a winch coupled with an hydraulic drive motor 1 reversibly driven through conduits 9, 11 and 10, 14 and a three position distributor 15 from a fluid pump 12, comprises a safety brake 2 normally applied by a spring 4 but releasable by an hydraulic jack 5, and a calibrated valve 16 which maintains sufficient pressure in the jack 5 to release the brake irrespective of the size of load being lifted by the winch. In the distributor position shown, the drive to the motor 1 is blanked off, and a conduit 18 from the operating chamber 5a of the jack 5 is open through conduits 11-14 to the fluid tank 7, whereby the spring 4 applies the brake 2. For wind up drive to the motor 1 pressure is supplied to the conduits 9, 11 18 and 19 and the pressure builds up until there is sufficient to displace a slide 20 against a spring 17 in the calibration valve 16, whereafter the pressure fluid is able to pass from a chamber 25 to a chamber 23 in the valve 16 and to the motor 1, the jack 5 by this time having been operated to release the brake 2. The pressure required to operate the jack 5 is controlled by the strength of the selected spring 17, such that the said pressure is reached before the slide 20 is displaced. For lowering a load, the motor 1 is reverse driven via the appropriate distributor position and the load is lowered unless the load overruns the motor whereupon the pressure in the conduit 10, 11 18, 19 is reduced and the slide 20 closes the return path from the motor and the brake is applied until the pressure builds up again. In the embodiment of Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown) the conduit supplying fluid for displacing the calibration valve slide is connected to the motor conduit between the distributor valve and the calibrative valve, a further three position distributor valve being placed in the motor conduit between the pump and the first said distributor-valve, for coupling another piece of hydraulic apparatus into the system. Also the conduit leading to the brake releasing jack passes through a two position distributor mechanically controlled through a cam and follower arrangement in response to the position of the first said distributor valve.
