Abstract

1371839 Controlling winches RUSTONBUCYRUS Ltd 25 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 49088/72 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] A free fall operating circuit for an hydraulic winch includes a normally engaged hydraulically releasable free fall clutch 7 and a sensing valve 16 operable to de-activate the clutch release means in response to a pressure differential between the pressure and return lines 11, 12 for the winch motor 1, whereby free fall is prevented whilst the winch drum 2 is being powered in either direction. The clutch 7 is releasable for winch free fall by either manual selection or a lockout valve 15 whereby fluid is supplied from a pump 14 through line 17, sensing valve 16 and line 18, the valve 16 permitting the fluid to pass from line 17 to 18 only when in its neutral position. The valve 16 is operated by pilot pressure lines 25, 26 coupling the motor lines 11, 12 to opposite ends of the valve 16 and any difference in pressure between the lines 11, 12 causes the valve 16 to be displaced from its neutral position and exhaust the lines 17 and 18 the free fall condition of the winch only being selectable therefore when a hoist direction control valve 9 is in its neutral position. To prevent re-engagement of the clutch 7 during free fall movement, which is manually controlled by a foot brake, a solenoid operated safety valve 30 is inserted in the pilot lines 25, 26 and is controlled in response to the speed of the drum 2 and the pressure in the line 18 whereby the clutch 7 cannot be re-engaged due to a pressure differential in the lines 11, 12 while a free fall condition exists since the sensing valve 16 is isolated from the lines 11, 12 by the closed valve 30. A dashpot valve 33 restricts the fluid flow from the clutch operating ram to cushion the effect of reengagement of the clutch due to a power failure. The valve 15 is interlocked with the overall start circuit for the winch so that the winch circuit can only be completed when the valve 15 is in the "off'' position and the free fall condition is not existing. A self sustaining clutch brake arrangement is interposed between the motor and the drum.
