Abstract
1350454 Fuel spray nozzles GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 May 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 16889/71 Heading F4T [Also in Division F1] To prevent carbon deposits on surfaces of a fuel spray nozzle exposed to the very high temperatures of a gas turbine engine combustion chamber by arranging for the washing of such surfaces with either air or fuel, a nozzle comprises a main body 56 with swirl slots 66 an orifice 68 for discharging a primary fuel spray cone 49 and a passage 70 with swirl slots 72 for delivering further fuel which forms a film on the frusto-conical guide surface 76 of a discharge head 58 and is sprayed therefrom as a secondary cone 48, a cylindrical shield 60 fixed to the discharge head at its upstream end and in close fitting relationship with a support surface 88 thereon at its downstream end so as to define an annular airspace 84 providing thermal insulation for the discharge head, and a cylindrical shroud 62 defining with the shield 60 an annular air passage 90 for delivering air from the compressor in a cone about and along the secondary fuel cone 48 and also being formed with axial ribs 100 to allow a fuel film to flow over its outer surface. The downstream end face 78 of the discharge head is made sharp to minimize the area exposed to the combustion zone and is disposed slightly upstream of the end 96 of the shroud to prevent damage during handling. The primary fuel passage, outlet and spray cone may be dispensed with. The nozzle, of which only the discharge end is shown, is described as being mounted in a gas turbine engine having a combustion chamber whereof the upstream end is fitted with a closure member 52.
