Abstract
1350327 Gun ranging RHEINMETALL GmbH 8 May 1972 [30 June 1971] 21397/72 Heading F3C In a method for ranging a gun the range of fire for a constant barrel elevation is used as a datum which is converted into impulses for apportioning the volume of propellant and/or adjusting the volume of the combustion chamber. In an embodiment a gun 1, having a rifled barrel 2 is rigidly connected to a gun carriage 3. A breechblock 4 is provided with a servo gear 5 for adjusting a combustion chamber and the barrel 2 carries an apportioning device 6 connected with a servo gear 7. The device 6 is coupled, via a conduit 8, to a propellant container 9 and via a conduit 10 to the combustion chamber. The servo gears 5, 7 are electrically coupled, via a converter 11, with a range-finder 12. In use a distance determined by the range finder 12 is provided as a datum to the converter 11 by which this value is converted into an electrical impulse suitable for the servo gear 5 of the breech block 4 and into a pulse suitable for the motor gearing 7 of the apportioning device 6. The size of the combustion chamber is adapted, to the quantity of propellant to be taken in, by the servo gear 5 and the servo gear 7 actuates the apportioning device 6 to extract the required quantity of propellant from the container 9, via the conduit 8 and is conveyed, via the conduit 10, to the combustion chamber. Firing of the gun is by a detonating device (not shown). In another embodiment liquid or paste-like propellant is apportioned by a piston 23, Fig. 2, in a cylinder 24, the piston being moved by a servo gearing 7 set by a range finder (not shown). The cylinder is fed with propellant via a non- return valve 25 and a conduit 8 and propellant is passed, from the cylinder via a non-return valve 22 and a conduit 10, and into a combustion chamber 20 of the gun. In a further embodiment the volume of a combustion chamber 20, Fig. 3, is varied by a piston 31. In yet another embodiment the volume of a combustion chamber 20, Fig. 4, is varied by a ram 36 which is used to position a projectile 21 in a gun barrel 35, an end 21a of the projectile 21 serving as a wall of the chamber 20.
