Abstract
1347500 Charging batteries MANUFACTURE D'ACCUMULATEURS ET D'OBJETS MOULES and SOC FULMEN 27 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 11740/71 Heading H2H Apparatus for rapidly charging a battery 3 comprises a reference electrode 1 and a device 5 for measuring the voltage generated between the electrode 1 and the negative battery terminal 4, this voltage being dependent on the gas pressure developed in the battery during charging, comparing this voltage in a comparator 6 with a voltage 7 representing the maximum gas pressure tolerable by the battery 3, the difference voltage being amplified by an amplifier 8 to cause a control unit 9 to function and thereby control a regulator 10 to regulate the charging current for the battery 3. The control unit 9 may comprise a step-by-step relay or a transistor flip-flop and the regulator 10 may include a variable ratio transformer or a variable impedance transistor in series with the rectifying elements of the regulator. Alternatively, the rectifying elements may be thyristors, the firing angles of which are controllable by the unit 9, in which case the control unit 9 may include a saturable inductor. The reference electrode may be of the mercury-mercurous sulphate type.
