Abstract

1345473 Tube forming mandrel in a packaging machine FR HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK AG 14 Jan 1972 [16 Jan 1971] 1812/72 Heading B8C [Also in Division F2] In a skelping device of the kind wherein a strip of material is passed over a forming shoulder 3 and is then folded back on itself to pass round a mandrel 2, the mandrel 2 is formed with a resilient outer surface at least at that part that co-operates with the fold of the shoulder 3 so that the sheet material is uniformly pressed against the former despite variations in the thickness of the sheet. This ensures the production of wrinkle free tubes. The resilience may be provided by an encircling band 5 of springy material secured in a groove 4 by screws 6. Alternatively a resiliently expandable collar (e.g. like a piston ring) may be used. The surfaces of the resiliant part of the mandrel and/or the complementary part of the shoulder may be coated with anti-friction material (e.g. P.T.F.E.). The resilience. allows passage of a portion of sheet of double thickness (e.g. the overlap formed when joining strips together).
