Abstract

1,128,765. Tunnelling machines. JAMES S. ROBBINS & ASSOCIATES Inc. 22 Nov., 1965 [1 Dec., 1964], No. 49497/65. Heading E1F. In a tunnelling machine a seal PS between the tail section 14 of the machine and erected lining L involves an annularly disposed resilient body 60 positioned between the tail section and a metallic ring 66 secured by one edge to the tail section. The body causes biassing of the free edge of the ring against the lining to form the desired seal therewith. Preferably the body is of triangular cross section and comprises gas-filled bladders or is formed of resilient foam material in a waterproof casing. The free edge of the ring is axially slotted so that the edge is formed by a peripheral ring of spring fingers. The fixed edge of the ring is preferably formed and secured to the tail sections in the manner described in Specification 1,128,766.
