Abstract

1345137 Explosive charges NITROCHEMIE GmbH 15 May 1961 [14 May 1960] 17689/61 Heading F3A A controlled and intensified explosive effect is obtained by combining a primary hollow charge 1 with a secondary ring-shaped charge 2 detonating the secondary charge 2 at least 5 microseconds after the hollow charge 1 has been detonated, and directing the blast from the charge 2 through a cone 3 on to that region of the target 4 which receives the blast from the preceding detonation of the hollow charge 1. The secondary charge 2 may be shielded from the hollow charge 1 by a steel cover 5 having a cone-shaped aperture and be provided with a tubular iron liner 6. The hollow charge 1 may be enclosed within a steel shell 8 and have a cone-shaped recess lined with copper. The transmission of the detonation from the hollow charge 1 to the secondary charge 2 in the embodiment shown is effected by four equispaced fuse cords 9 carrying detonators at their ends. Alternative methods of consecutively firing the charges 1, 2 include the use of electrical high-speed delayed action fuses, interposed priming caps, bodies propelled by the primary detonation, and a detonating membrane. The invention finds application in the perforating of rock overlying petroiferous strata as well as for military purposes, e.g. in projectiles or rockets.
