Abstract

1344947 Wheel cutters E L AXBJER 13 Jan 1972 [20 Jan 1971] 1627/72 Heading B3W A pipe cutter comprises cutting wheels 37 mounted on a chain 10 having means for adjusting the distance between the side links of each chain link 38, 39 to compensate for wear, tensioning members 30, 31 for tightening the chain 10 around the pipe 11 and having co-acting guide surfaces (32) (Fig. 1, not shown) and 33 for ensuring alignment of the chain ends and means 14 for moving the chain 10 around the pipe 11. The cutting wheels 37 are mounted on pins 40 connecting the chain links 38, 39 together, each pin 40 having a slotted cylindrical head 42 and a screw threaded end 43 in engagement with one of the chain links 39 whereby the distance between the chain links 38, 39 may be adjusted to compensate for wear. The pin end 43 is engaged by a lock nut 45 having a cylindrical outer surface provided with spanner engaging areas. The depth of cut of the cutting wheels 37 is limited by support rollers 41 mounted on the pins 40. One end of the chain 10 is pivoted at 34 to a tensioning lever 30 pivoted to a lever 31 which has forked limbs 46 engaging a chain pin 40 of the other end of the chain 10. The chain 10 is reciprocated so that each wheel 37 moves a greater distance than the wheel spacing by a pneumatically operated piston and cylinder device 14 pivotally and removably connected to the lever 30 and a block 15 having serrated surfaces 18 engaging the pipe 11. The block 15 is held in position by a chain 19 which can be tightened by a threaded spindle 21. The cutting chain 10 is tightened around the pipe 11 by a nut 36 during the cutting operation at the end of the outward stroke of the piston rod 27. The cutting chain 10 may alternatively be moved in one direction around the pipe 11.
