Abstract
1342291 Welding by fusion OCEAN SYSTEMS Inc 23 April 1971 [24 April 1970] 10990/71 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] Submerged pipe-line sections 6, 8 to be joined in an underwater welding operation, are aligned and supported in apparatus including a welding chamber 12 into which the pipe ends project through apertures in a pair of spaced, opposed walls, and axially movable support arrangements 14, 16 which align and direct the pipes into the chamber 12. As shown in Fig. 1 the support arrangements 14, 16 comprise frame assemblies having cylinder portions 28 which slide axially under pressure actuation on pistons 26 fixed to the welding chamber 12. The chamber 12 may be of the hyperboric type having an open base, water being expelled under internal pressure. A guide rail 32, arcuate in transverse section, is fitted in each frame 14, 16 in alignment with the chamber holes (22, 24) (Fig. 2, not shown). As shown in Fig. 6b, a ball-and-socket joint 38 carried on the rail 32, mounts a cylinder 40 which is thus universally pivoted and a depending rod 44 is attached to a piston working in the cylinder and extends through an aperture (42) (Fig. 2a, not shown) in the rail 32. The rod 44 is attached to a collar (35) (Fig. 2a, not shown) encircling the pipe and two such support assemblies support each pipe. In an alternative arrangement, the ball-and-socket are replaced by a pin and bracket mount (54) (Fig. 2b, not shown) connected to a collar (50). The collars 35 (or 50) are placed on the pipes before submerging. The pipes 6, 8 may thus be moved, by pressure actuation of the cylinders 40, to fit against the rail 32. The cylinders 28 are pressure actuated to draw the frames towards the chamber 12 when the pipes enter the chamber to abut each other. Final axial alignment and support during welding are effected by a pair of actuators (60) (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) in the chamber 12. The actuators each comprise a curved clamp (66) (Fig. 4, not shown) on a pivot-pin and edge bracket assembly (70) movable under pressure actuation in a cylinder to position the pipe ends transversely of the main axis.
