[Also in Group XXI] A fluid-pressure operated jacking system comprises a first piston-and-cylinder assembly 1, 2 having means 3, 14 for connecting the rod of the piston to a member 4, such as a spud, movable vertically relative to another member 5, such as a buoyant hull, on which the assembly is mounted and a second piston-and-cylinder assembly 6, 7 in communication with the first assembly and coaxial with a third piston-andcylinder assembly 8, 9 supplied with compressed air and acting as a dashpot, the pistons 6, 8 of the second and third assemblies having a common rod 10 provided with means 11, 14a for connection to the member 4. The cylinder 7 of the second assembly is connected by valved ducts 23, 24 to a supply of fluid pressure and by valved ducts 12, 13 to the cylinder 2 of the first assembly which, in turn, is connected to valved exhaust ducts 21, 22. The cylinder 9 of the third assembly is connected to a supply of compressed air and is provided with relief valves 20. When it is desired to move the spud 4 relative to the hull 5, teeth 14 on a crosshead 3 secured to the rod of the piston 1 are engaged with a rack on the spud and fluid pressure from duct 23 or 24 passes through cylinder 7 and either duct 12 or 13 to the cylinder 1. Teeth 14a on a crosshead 11 secured to the rod 10 can then be engaged with the rack on the spud to permit the teeth 14 on the crosshead 3 to be withdrawn from the rack to enable the position of the crosshead 3 to be adjusted before reengagement with the rack for another movement of the spud. The ducts 12, 13 between the cylinders 4, 7 ensure that any disturbances caused by wave or other motion results in equal displacements of the pistons 1, 6 of the displacements being damped by the third piston-andcylinder assembly 8, 9. In an alternative embodiment, the crossheads are provided with pins engaging holes in the spuds.
