Abstract
1336818 Making coins; rolling; forging; punches GRANGES ESSEM AB 23 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 44463/71 Headings B3A B3M B3H and B3W [Also in Division G4] A coin or disc-like object is made from material plated on both sides by forming a blank with a peripheral edge of V-section and then pressing the peripheral edge inwards towards the centre of the blank to form a blank suitable for embossing. The blank may be formed from plated sheet 10, Fig. 1, using a pair of dies 13 with V-section working surfaces 16, 17. The dies cause the plating layers 11 to be drawn into the grooves formed but preferably do not separate the blank 20 from the sheet. The grooves may be formed in two stages using dies (13<SP>1</SP>), (1311), Fig. 3 (not shown), to form a curved edged groove. The blank may be circular or polygonal. Alternatively the grooves are formed by one or more pairs of rollers 18, Fig. 4, acting on a punched blank 10<SP>1</SP>. The rollers may be driven and either the blank is rotated or the roller pairs moved around the blank. The grooves may be rolled in two stages. The partially formed blank is separated from the sheet or scrap blank by a punch and die set 26, 27, and the peripheral edge forced inwards by rollers. The core material is a copper alloy with 3% nickel and the outer layers are copper alloy with 25% nickel.
