Abstract

1389626 Making leaf springs; rolling NHK SPRING CO Ltd 17 July 1973 [20 July 1972 12 July 1973] 34105/73 Headings B3A and B3M [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] An apparatus for making leaf springs with tapered end portions comprises a furnace 21 through which a metal band is fed to a rolling mill 22 whose roll separation is variable to form reduced thickness portions in the band, the band then being fed to shears 27 to cut the band into individual springs. The individual springs are then reheated in a furnace and fed to a/or one of a pair of punch and die sets 31, 32 for hole punching. The band and springs are fed through the apparatus on a roller table 20. The furnace 21 heats the band to 900‹ C. The rolling mill 22 has working rolls 23, 24 and pinch rolls 25, 26. The separation of the working rolls 23, 24 is effected by a screw down mechanism 44, Fig. 6, controlled by a pulse motor 43 fed with signals from a logic circuit 42. The logic circuit stores information of desired taper lengths (l 1 ), (l 2 ), Fig. 7 (not shown), spring length (L), spring thickness (T) and front end thickness (t 1 ). These features of each spring are measured by the pinch rollers 25, 26 connected to pulse generators 40, 41a, 41b. whose signals are fed to the logic circuit 42. The measured valves are processed in dependence on the desired values and the output signal is applied to the pulse motor 43. The rolls 25 and one roll 26 serve to measure the length passed between them while the other roll 26 measures the thickness of the band. The ends of the leaf spring produced may have linear or curved tapers on one or both faces, Figs. 9A-D, 10A-D (not shown). The tapers may be symmetrical or assymetrical.
