Abstract

1334625 Refrigerators CRYOGENIC TECHNOLOGY Inc 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 25155/71 Heading F4H In a cryogenic refrigerator or liquefier operating in substantially the same manner as described in Specification 938,182, the flow of H.P. fluid into and withdrawal of L.P. fluid from the apparatus is controlled by a rotary valve which is readily interchangeable to alter the timing of the cycle. The refrigerator comprises a displacer 22 which is reciprocated within a fluid-tight enclosure housing 15 to define an upper warm chamber 22 and a lower cold chamber 24 of variable volumes which communicate with each other through a regenerator 40 within the displacer. The displacer is mechanically driven by a motor 136 via a scotch yoke 63 to the crank 71 of which is linked the rotary valve 85 through a pin 86 to be rotated by a main drive shaft 75 of the motor. The rotary portion of the valve is formed of a ring moulded from a synthetic resin having a H.P. fluid passage (95) moulded in one surface with connections 96, 97 with the valve periphery so as to be continuously supplied with the H.P. fluid from a compressor (not shown) via passages 145, 149. The valve also comprises a L.P. passage (100) having connections (101, 102) with a central opening (103) and a sealing surface 105 to mate with a stationary valve plate 110 having a fluid passage 116 to register with an angled passage 118 opening into the warm chamber 23 of the refrigerator so as to provide fluid communication alternatively with the H.P. and L.P. passage in the valve as it is rotated. Cold exhaust fluid is discharged via passages 114, 128, 130, 134 and 135 so as to flow around the motor as a coolant and finally to a conduit 142 for return to a L.P. reservoir e.g. the inlet of a compressor. The flow of H.P. fluid into the refrigerator is stopped prior to the displacer achieving its uppermost position by the design of the rotary valve and the fluid is discharged when the displacer reaches its uppermost position and while it travels downwardly to a predetermined level.
