Abstract

1,160,568. Nuclear power plant. MARTINMARIETTA CORP. 21 Nov., 1966, No. 52083/66. Heading G6C. In a radioisotope power plant the thermal energy produced by the fuel at the commencement of its life is in excess of the plant requirements and the surplus is removed by an isothermal cooling system in which the coolant flow is effected by capillary action. The cooling system comprises a tube, lined internally with a wick, which conveys the cooling liquid from a radiator to the fuel zone where it is evaporated. The coolant vapour returns to the radiator along the pipe interior. Control of the cooling rate is effected by restricting the flow of the cooling fluid in the tube. The flow of vapour to the radiator may be restricted by a non-condensing gas, the flow of coolant liquid in the capillaries may be restricted by the presence of a non-vaporizable liquid or a liquid may be added which solidifies and blocks the capillaries. The thermal energy converter may be either thermo-electric or thermionic and the helium formed by the alpha decay is vented through a semi-permeable membrane into the tube to function as a flow restricting gas.
