Abstract

1329971 Rolling mills ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 28 Sept 1970 [3 Oct 1969] 48833/69 Heading B3M A strip rolling mill is provided with a pair of flexible work rolls 3, 4 each backed by a single row of axially short backing rolls 5, each of the backing rolls being mounted in a carrier 6 which is pivoted to the frame of the mill. The work rolls are also supported by reaction rolls 10 on one or both sides. When the rolls 10 act on only one side of the work rolls, the backing rolls 5 are offset to the opposite side from the vertical plane through the work roll axes. Intermediate rolls 50, Fig. 5a, may be positioned between the work end backing rolls, the intermediate rolls being supported by reaction rolls 51 or roller bearings on one or both sides. Between each roll carrier 6 and an adjacent beam 1 or 2 of the mill is located an hydraulic cushion 8. A single cushion may be provided for all the carriers associated with one work roll, or an individual cushion may be provided for each carrier. The cushions normally exert the same force on all the carriers, but it is possible to adjust the pressure exerted on those cushions adjacent the edges of the strip being rolled, in order to maintain a desired shape of the strip. The pressure is adjusted by vertical rods, acting on the individual carriers. The rods act along lines 15, Fig. 1, and exert a variable force according to the fulcrum position of a pivoted load-transmitting lever (Fig. 2, not shown). In the case of individual cushions, the force exerted by selected cushions can be varied by controlling the proportion of force, derived from a load cell, which is transmitted to the cushions. The control of the force can in either case be made automatically in response to the sensed positions of the strip edges. In order that the backing rolls do not imprint themselves on the work rolls, the work rolls can be moved axially in steps, suitable on each occasion that the roll force is reduced to zero. The work rolls may be driven or undriven, the strip being drawn through the mill in the latter case.
