Abstract

1,134,635. Rolling. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES Ltd. 4 March, 1966 [9 March, 1965], No. 10059/65. Heading B3M. A strip rolling mill includes a pair of relatively flexible work rolls 1, each supported by a number of rolls 2 of short axial length which are housed, in staggered relationship or opposite one another, in relatively flexible cages 4 positioned within rigid beams 5. An hydraulic capsule 7 exerts an equal pressure on all the supporting rolls. In a modified form, Fig. 3, pairs of rolls 2 are individually mounted in brackets 12 which are pivoted at 14. Spring loaded hooks 15, provided with adjusting nuts 17, engage with the brackets. By compressing the springs 16 adjacent the strip edges the rolling load on the strip at these points can be reduced. The strip passes between the rolls under forward and back tension. Each work roll can be provided with two small diameter, flexible, supporting rolls which are in turn, supported by three rows of short supporting rolls. The rolls can be supported in frames B and C, Fig. 5, which are pivoted at A, rotation of a screwed rod F adjusting the pass between the work rolls. The work rolls can be internally cooled.
