Abstract
1329251 Rolling; making bearing rings or gears NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 April 1971 [31 Dec 1969 22 Feb 1971] 63607/69 and 5132/71 Headings B3A and B3M During the rolling of a cylindrical workpiece 34 to form a bearing ring or gear-wheel, the shape of the edges and the increase in width of the workpiece are controlled by radially outwardly diverging flanges 60 on rolls 14, Fig. 4, the flanges being set at an angle of up to 15 degrees to the normal to the rotational axis of the rolls. The workpiece 34 is mounted centrally on a rotatable mandrel by resiliently holding the workpiece between opposed spring and a pair of rotating rolls 14 are advanced to contact the workpiece to work harden the surface and form an initial impression. At this stage rolls 50 contact the workpiece so as to reduce the ovality of the workpiece caused by the rolls 14. After the rolls 14 have been held in their most advanced position for up to two revolutions, the rolls 14 and 50 are retracted and the workpiece removed from the mandrel. In another embodiment the rolls 14 are skewed to reduce the ovality of the workpiece during rolling. An outer bearing ring is made by inserting a cylindrical workpiece 82 in a roll 86 and resiliently holding the workpiece between collars 92 and 94. A rotating roll 84 is then moved in the direction of arrow 106 to start the forming of the workpiece. (For Figures see next page.)
